Orthodox Church by Timothy Ware

The Orthodox Church by Timothy Ware

The Orthodox Church by Timothy Ware is an introductory book on the history, beliefs, and practices of the Orthodox Church. The book covers a variety of aspects of the Orthodox Church, including its theology, its history, and its interactions with Christians who are not Orthodox.

The book is divided into two parts, with the first part covering the history of the Orthodox Church and the second part taking up various theological themes and looking at the worship of the Orthodox Church.

What I Liked

For a religion book, it’s pretty accessible.

What I Did Not Like

I figured it was a niche book when I started (I picked it up since there’s an Orthodox Church near my house that I knew nothing about)…but wow was it super niche. It requires quite a bit of background and jargon / definitions to read through.

Timothy Ware's The Orthodox Church serves as an introduction to the history, beliefs, and practices of the Orthodox Church. The book is split into two parts: one focusing on its history and the other on theology and worship. I appreciated how accessible it is for a religion book, making complex ideas easier to grasp. However, I found it surprisingly niche, requiring a fair amount of background knowledge and jargon that can be off-putting for newcomers. Overall, it’s a solid read if you're willing to put in the effort, but it might not be for everyone.
Pros:
  • The book is accessible for a religion book.
  • It covers a variety of aspects of the Orthodox Church.
  • It provides a structured approach with two distinct parts.
Cons:
  • The book is very niche and requires background knowledge.
  • It contains a lot of jargon and definitions that can be challenging.
  • There are no other cons.
