3 Reasons Why Astronomy Is Underrated

Couple stargazing together with a astronomical telescope, looking at planets, stars, lunar eclipse and meteor shower.

Looking at the moon and stars has always been so magical…and so daunting to me. To be focused on the biggest things in the universe, it’s surprising how much tiny details matter.

We Have a Special Gift in Time

Ever since Hubble’s discovery of the red shift, we’ve known that…the entire universe is running away from us. In the distant future, the sky will be black. No stars. No galaxies. Even the planets will be gone and the moon will be a dot. But that’s NOT NOW! Relish the joy that we do have the chance to observe the stars, planets, and moon.

Apps Make All The Difference

If you don’t have an app like SkyMap – download it. It’s changed everything for me about astronomy. Open the app, look in the sky, learn, and appreciate. No more guessing constellations or wondering if that bright dot is Mars or Jupiter. Enjoy knowing for sure that you are looking at a freaking star or plant.

Get Put In Your Place

One thing that psychologists know for sure is that humans need to be part of something bigger than themselves. Joining a community, movement, or group takes time and consistency. Looking at the stars does not. Nothing puts me in my proper place like looking at the night sky. It’s ridiculously enormous and timeless and beautiful. It will always be bigger than all of us.

Download an app, set outside tonight and look at the night sky. It’s always worthwhile.
