3 Reasons Why Public Domain Software Is Underrated
Public domain software refers to software that has been released without any copyright restrictions, meaning anyone can use, modify, redistribute, and even commercialize the software without needing to seek permission or pay royalties. I’m not a developer, but I love public domain software.
You Can’t Mess Up
I’m a very intense user of software. I love to customize it, tweak it, and push it to its limits…even if I’ve never written software from scratch. And I hate paying for software…only to break it, sit with customer support, or find out that I can’t tweak it. Public domain software is just that…it’s free and public domain. Mess up all you want!
Give Old Computers a New Job
Even though I love my new Macbook Air, my old computers are, in the grand scheme of things, insanely powerful machines…even if they can’t run the most current software. But old software runs perfectly and is a great fit for old computers. Also…I don’t care if my kids break public domain software on an old computer.
Community & Long Term Support
Once software is out from a proprietary setup, it can be maintained by anyone. It can be forked, amended, or made new. It’s even better than putting used cars or used appliances to new use.
Grab an old computer and install Linux on it. Download GIMP, Firefox, and a few other public apps and make art!
