Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
Golden Compass is a science fiction/fantasy novel that tells the story of 11-year-old Lyra, who embarks on a quest to find her kidnapped playmate Roger and her imprisoned uncle, Lord Asriel. The story takes place in a world where humans have animal companions called daemons, and Lyra’s daemon is named Pantalaimon.
The book explores themes of humanity, identity, and the soul, as well as morality and ethics. It also touches on the fleetingness of childhood and the tension between children and adults. Social class is another important theme, with inequality and discrimination being highlighted through the story of the gyptians.
What I Liked
The His Dark Materials series, along with Chronicles of Narnia, are my absolute favorite children’s novels. I cannot wait to read them to my kids. It’s an incredible world with amazing characters.
