Dusk by F Sionel Jose

Dusk- A Novel

Dusk is the first novel in the five-novel Rosales Saga by F Sionel Jose. The story is set in the 1880s and follows the exile of a tenant family from their village and their attempt to start a new life in the small town of Rosales. The novel is not just a historical account but also explores the eternal search for true faith and the meaning of existence.

The main themes of the book include suffering, salvation, poverty, anger, love, and the struggle against foreign powers that deprive people of their lands. The novel reflects on the societal struggles of the characters and their personal journeys as they face adversity, death, and love.

What I Liked

I have a personal connection to The Philippines, so I’m especially interested in the setting. But the book also reminded me so much of Steinbeck’s East of Eden and how it explores actions within a family and society over generations. Brilliant book.

What I Did Not Like

Nothing – great read.
