Abandoned Oglethorpe County
I have lots of family in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.
In fact, I lived there for almost 8 years – all through high school and part of college. It’s a beautiful, large county. It’s classic Georgia Piedmont with forests, pasture, and small towns.
But like many parts of Georgia (and the rest of the rural US), it is slowly depopulating due to aging and migration. Although there has been some suburban growth on the Athens side of the county, the county overall is still well below its 1920s population peak – and the eastern side is very well near empty.
I love to explore abandoned places – and the county has lots of interesting photo opps. Here’s a few I’ve taken.
