5 People Rewilding the Internet
I love the idea of “rewilding the Internet” – it’s an idea borrowed from ecology that fits really well IMO with Internet spaces. As Noema puts it –
Our online spaces are not ecosystems, though tech firms love that word. They’re plantations; highly concentrated and controlled environments, closer kin to the industrial farming of the cattle feedlot or battery chicken farms that madden the creatures trapped within.
But there are two sides that make rewilding work – there’s creation and discovery. I mean, the cliche of “if a tree falls in a forest, does it make a noise?”. And ever since Google killed off Reader, discovery on the Web has become less and less convenient. Even if you have your browser, RSS feed or email setup and ready to go surfing…who do you follow to discover what’s out there?
Tom Scott
Tom Scott is one of the Internet’s most genuine personalities. He may be on sabbatical from YouTube, but he’s still sharing the best stuff around YouTube and the web on his Weekly Newsletter.
Clive Thompson
This guy has been on the Internet…forever? He writes The Linkfest newsletter which is an absolute marvel and joy of discovery.
Wikipedia Editors
Wikipedia is still the best of the Internet. It’s a treasure that we all need to maintain by using, contributing, and donating to. It’s still the best “jumping off” point to the Internet. And the editors do an incredible job with the Homepage. Browse the articles, but also browse the sources which point to places all around the Web.
Jason Kottke
One of the only professional bloggers still around, Jason is an institution. He follows some trends, but also links out to so many interesting finds on his blog.
Open Culture
Open Culture is the best free media & educational resource on the Internet. For anyone who complains that the Internet is dead / dying – this site is the first place (after Wikipedia) that I point to. Visit Open Culture.
The good ‘ole Internet is still out there. It’s just not as convenient as the Big Sites. The more people use it, the more of it there will be.
