Bluesky and ensh***ification

Yup. This post is right on -> Bluesky and enshittification

But I’m not on Bluesky and I don’t have any plans to join it anytime soon. I wrote about this in 2023: I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will.

Bluesky is trendy. And I actually kinda like Threads. I hope they both implement the ActivityPub protocol. I’m obviously going to go where the people are for my business & clients. But for my personal life on the Internet, I’m not going to do it. Bluesky is venture-funded. Threads is owned by Facebook. I don’t know how many times we all need to watch this movie of how social apps evolve.

Email, Messaging, RSS, and now ActivityPub are all open protocols. They’ve been around. It is possible to build sleek & convenient applications on all of them.
