TIL about Taste Games and Status
One of the favorite reads this year was Status Games. It’s a brilliant tour of how humans cooperate in groups through signalling and allocating status.
And TIL that there was a French philosopher and author named Pierre Bourdieu who dug into how we use taste and aesthetics to signal status.
The writing gets a little dense, but this series of blog posts explained it all in a funny, useful way.
Also, it all reminded me of the best line from Beginner’s Guide To Paradise – that sometimes we can become just a “bundle of opinions” if we are continually chasing status through taste games.
