99% Invisible City by Roman Mars

99% Invisible City by Roman Mars

99% Invisible City by Roman Mars and Kurt Kohlstedt is a New York Times best-selling exploration into the unnoticed yet essential elements that compose our urban environments. Stemming from the highly acclaimed (and one of my favorites) podcast, 99% Invisible, this book delves into the intricacies of city design and architecture, uncovering the stories and secrets behind the objects and structures that make up the fabric of the cities we live in.

The authors guide readers through an array of urban features, from the mundane to the extraordinary, revealing the design processes and historical contexts that have shaped them. With over 100 detailed illustrations by artist Patrick Vale, the book offers a visually engaging experience that complements the rich narratives provided by Mars and Kohlstedt.

The main themes of “The 99% Invisible City” include the appreciation of everyday design, the hidden stories of urban elements, and the impact of design on our daily lives. It encourages readers to look beyond the surface and appreciate the complexity and thoughtfulness that go into aspects of urban life that are often taken for granted. From power grids and fire escapes to drinking fountains and street signs, the book provides a new perspective on the built environment, transforming the way we interact with our cities.

What I Liked

The stories, formatting, and illustrations were all fascinating and right on. I love the mix of inspiring and useful stories (like the street markings chapter). I definitely see my city in a very different way.

What I Did Not Like

Not a whole lot. It is heavily skewed toward global, mega cities like New York, London, Chicago, and Tokyo. But most all of the examples can be found in midsized cities as well.
