I’ve always been intellectually interested in gardening, but once I finally got around to doing it properly, I discovered a few non-obvious things.

Outsized Sense of Control

There is something so satisfying about eating something that you’ve grown from seed. It’s far, far, far from any sort of self-sufficiency. But it’s comforting to know that it’s still possible in the crazy, hyper-modern world to stick a seed in the dirt and get some food a few months later.

Learn From Trial & Error

Gardeners are the absolute worst advice givers. And the only secret is that you have to learn by doing and observing. Just keep at it and stack new bits of knowledge. Don’t let information overwhelm stop you from getting started.

Get Some Quality, Interesting Seeds & Make Some Good Soil

Big box stores sell boring seeds. Get something weird that will hold your interest. For me, that meant getting some green cotton and weird watermelon from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. But the world of heirloom seeds is hilarious and fun in its own right. Also, “good soil” just means churning it up and adding some fertilizer.
