3 Reasons Why Radio Is Underrated
It’s a hundred years old, but should be better than ever.
Radio Always Works & Is Always Free
There’s no data plan or Wifi or batteries or electricity or network slowdown. You can get radio on a hand crank in a hurricane during a power outage. It just works. Also, it’s free.
Free Background Music & Sports
I’m from Georgia, so there’s nothing like Braves baseball and Georgia football on the radio. There’s no subscription and no signup. Ditto for music and news. NPR is still on the radio – not just on your podcast app. Same with ESPN Radio and all sorts of music. It’s great and free.
Radio Is Better Now With HD
Around the same time as broadcast television, radio signals got an upgrade. They are still broadcast over the air, but they are processed digitally so the reception is much better. And if you have an HD Radio, all the stations have channels. So music stations will have different variations and NPR will broadcast news and classical music all day.
If you don’t have a radio, look into buying an HD radio. If you do, keep the batteries ready for emergencies, but try it out in the house sometime. It works even without a smart speaker.
