United Nations: A Very Short Introduction

United Nations

United Nations: A Very Short Introduction is a book written by Jussi M. Hanhimäki that provides an overview of the history, mission, successes, and shortcomings of the United Nations.

he book begins with a brief introduction to the UN, which was founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, and promoting social progress, better living standards, and human rights.

The book then goes on to discuss the internal politics of the UN, its procedural aspects, such as the veto power of any of the permanent members of the Security Council, and how business is conducted when there are disagreements.

It also covers the criticism of the UN for not doing enough, the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the idea of the UN having no teeth or purpose in the modern world.

The main purpose of the UN is to provide a place for countries to work together for common aims, to censure countries that act badly, and to spread peace, justice, and health to the peoples of the world.

The book also discusses the limitations of the UN, such as limited resources, limited budgets, and the limiting options of realpolitik.

The five main objectives of the UN are to maintain international peace and security, protect human rights, deliver humanitarian aid, support sustainable development and climate action, and uphold international law.

Overall, this book provides an informative overview of the United Nations and its role in the world today. It is a great resource for those looking to learn more about the UN and its history.

What I Liked

Like most Very Short Introductions, they do what they promise. And the UN is really a perfect topic for the series to cover. It’s big, strange, important…and very counter-intuitive.

I liked the balance between theory and real-world applications. International Relations Theory is critical to understand the existence of the UN…but it’s also super-boring and counter-intuitive. The real-life applications is important to understand what the UN exactly does…though it can get bogged down in individual personalities and controversy.

What I Did Not Like

Not a whole lot – this is an especially well-done Very Short Introduction.
