Whitley Gap Shelter on the Appalachian Trail

Whitley Gap Shelter on the Appalachian Trail

One of the best short day hikes in Georgia is up to Cowrock Mountain from Tesnatee Gap. However, the hike up to Wildcat Mountain from Hogpen Gap is almost as fun. And as a bonus, you can continue down the trail to check out the Whitley Gap Shelter – one of the many shelters near Wilderness on the Appalachian Trail. I’m not a thru-hiker, but it is pretty interesting to see one up close.

The shelter is surprisingly sturdy. I’d absolutely bunk down in one during a storm or snow event.
