Best. State. Ever. by Dave Barry
Best. State. Ever. by Dave Barry is a brilliantly funny exploration of the Sunshine State from the man who knows it best: Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times–bestselling author Dave Barry.
The book starts with a dedication to Florida, and Barry’s mission to explain why all the other states are now laughing at Florida. He quickly realizes that the answer lies in its climate and geography, as the warm climate attracts millions of visitors each year to Florida, some of whom end up settling in the state.
Barry then takes readers on a tour of the unique places that make Florida special, such as Tarpon Springs, the Sponge Capital of the World; Cassadaga, the Psychic Capital of the World; Gatorland, the Alligator Capital of the World; Dave Shealy’s Skunk Ape Research Center; and the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, home of the World-Famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids.
He also visits The Villages, the world’s largest retirement community and the fastest growing city in the United States. Finally, he ends his tour with a trip to Key West, or at least the fifty some-odd bars that make up the southernmost tip of the eastern seaboard.
Through his witty observations and hilarious anecdotes, Barry paints a vivid picture of the Sunshine State and its people. He also provides useful takeaways for those who may be considering a move to Florida, such as the fact that Floridians can enjoy its corrupt and inefficient government for a lot less money than other states.
Overall, Best. State. Ever. is an entertaining and informative read that will leave readers with a newfound appreciation for the Sunshine State.
