Midnight Sun by Jo Nesbo
Midnight Sun is a crime fiction novel that tells the story of a hitman named Jon who is on the run after betraying Oslo’s biggest crime lord, The Fisherman. He flees to a remote mountain town in Norway where the sun never sets, hoping to find sanctuary. However, he soon discovers that The Fisherman’s men are getting closer, and the midnight sun is slowly driving him insane.
The book is part noir crime fiction, showcasing Nesbo at his best with suspense, crime, and revenge. But it is also a character study, following an unlikely criminal who finds greater purpose, grace, and forgiveness in an unlikely place. The themes of the book include redemption, hope, and the consequences of one’s actions.
What I Liked
The writing, plot, and character development are all right on. I’m a big fan of Scandinavian fiction (ever since Girl with The Dragon Tattoo). I don’t know what about it resonates, but it’s good crime fiction.
What I Did Not Like
Like Murakami, Nesbo’s work is super-dark and really strange. It’s not horror or shock fiction or anything. It’s pretty straightforward crime fiction, but it’s weird…so even though I like the books, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend them to just anyone.
