India’s Collapsing Poverty Rate

Over the past decade, India has significantly reduced poverty. Extreme poverty (living on less than $2.15 per day) fell from 16.2 percent in 2011/2012 to 2.3 percent in 2022/2023, lifting 171 million people above this line.

I got to visit India in 2015 and again in 2022. The improvements in just one city in the small area of life that I got to see was incredible. India hasn’t seen the same physical change that China did during its rise. But it is reducing poverty nonetheless – with all the wonderful positive feedback loops that simply having less poverty creates.
