Best Campfire Firewoods

One of the most useful pages of Bushcraft by Dave Canterbury was this chart on the burnability (word?) of different woods.

In hindsight, it’s obvious different trees are better or worse for starting fires. But for a total beginner, it was a total revelation. Understanding which trees ignite faster (softwoods) and which trees burn longer & hotter (hardwoods) makes starting & maintaining a fire soooo much simpler.

There is even a significant difference in smoke – even within hardwoods and softwoods.

Being much pickier with my firewood gathering has made better fires (both in a fire ring and my Solo Stove).
